So how can CEOs of multinational companies tackle such challenges afflicting the Indian market? With a population of more than 1.2 billion people, it is a mighty market indeed. But reports of slowing growth, corruption and political uncertainty have left many multinational companies wary of going in. Ravi Venkatesan is the former India boss of Microsoft and he conquered the chaos as he called it, or at least that's how he described it in his recent book. I asked him what advantages India offered to businesses such as his.
I think we have a lot of things going for the country, but unfortunately it doesn't present a very good faith, particularly in the last three or four years. The government is going after all companies and multinationals, especially for taxation, you might be familiar with Vodafone's challenges in India where government amended the tax laws retroactively to 1960 something in order to get Vodafone to pay. Infrastructures are awful and that's one of the most striking contrasts, you know, when you land in a country like China versus India, the tar is so creaky and awful.
