Temperatures are forecast to climb as high as 40 degrees Celsius in some parts of the country, and the National Meteorological Center has issued a Level Three hot weather warning - just one below the highest.
Temperature above 40 degrees are forecast for areas in Zhejiang, Hunan, and parts of the Sichuan Basin and the South Xinjiang Basin. In Beijing, power consumption for air-conditioning has hit a three-year high.
In Shanghai, more than ten people have died of heatstroke during an unprecedented eight straight days of temperatures above 38 degrees. The Shanghai Meteorological Center says this July has been the hottest month since records started 140 years ago, 24 days of temperatures at or above 35 degrees.
In Jiangsu Province, the record is being set with 18 days. The China Meteorological Administration has launched the highest level emergency response for the first time.
