The friars, dining in silence, would have been drawn into the sacred space of the mural. Its creator was not himself a man of conventional Christian beliefs. But he was steeped in the religious culture that was all around him, and this depth of knowledge is evident in every inch of the Last Supper.
Leonardo, like all Florentines would have invisible seen and as young artist certainly and been deeply impressed by the enormous eight-metre-tall figure of Christ in the 13th century mosaics in the Baptistery. Before the invention of the modern billboard it was the biggest image anyone could see in the entire city. It shows the body of Christ in the shape of a cross. It shows the wounds of Christ's crucifixion. And it is that very image that it seems to me he has in mind when for of the Christ of the Last Supper. |
