By the time Leonardo was 30, he was ready to try his fortunes away from Florence. One of the last paintings he saw before he left was probably a Last Supper, created for the monastery of San Marco. It was state of the art, with three-dimensional space and lavish decoration. But the design was still stuck in the previous century. Now the artist who was to change all this was on his way north to meet his ideal patron, Ludovico The Moor.
Leonardo da Vinci in 1494 had indeed progressed into the favour of Ludovico Sforza into a position of some courtly status. But he might well have felt that his energies and his abilities had not fully been used. So when the initial project of the Last Supper was begun, it was, I would say a project which he regarded as something that might make or break him.李奥纳多三十岁那年决定离开佛罗伦斯闯天下，他离开之前看到的一幅作品，可能是为圣马可修道院画的“最后的晚餐”。那幅画的技巧十分进步，有三度空间和华美的装饰，但构图仍十分老旧。即将改变这一切的艺术家已动身北行，和他心目中的理想金主斯佛萨见面。李奥纳多达文西在1494年已顺利地得到了斯佛萨的宠信，但他仍然觉得自己的能力和经历没能充分发挥。所以“最后的晚餐”工程展开时，我仍然觉得这对他而言是个可以载舟也可以覆舟的计划。
