At least 42 people have died, after a bus caught fire on an elevated section of road in East China’s Fujian Province. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
Xinhua News agency says the bus was part of Xiamen City’s Rapid Transit service. The bus, which was said to have been carrying nearly 100 passengers, burst into flames during the evening rush hour. More than 30 people are reported to have been injured in the blaze.
Local authorities suspended the city’s bus network in the wake of the fire, but say the fire has now been put out. Xiamen’s Rapid Transit system was opened in 2008. It covers a length of over 80 kilometers and carries more than 250-thousand passengers each day. |
