We have to consider that in 1484 the three large paintings had already been taken down from their original setting. And almost certainly, they had never been re-hung. So the theft was easily committed. The three paintings were lying around, maybe already wrapped up, ready to be taken away.
The panels had been stolen from their rightful owner, but the ordeal was not yet over. Once they were at his palace, Lorenzo apparently decided that the shape of the paintings did not quite match his requirements.
I suspect that Lorenzo had to fit the paintings onto the wall that he had and it is possible that the arched tops of the paintings wouldn't fit onto his wall.
The services of Big Frank were called upon again.
There is a sense in which he's making them into a new kind of pictures, something closer to what we're used to seeing in galleries. A framed object on a wall, something to be appreciated as a picture, and less as simply something that covered the entire wall surface. |
