The AFC Champions League, Beijing Guoan had a chance to make a little club history this evening in South Korea. After a 0-0 draw with FC Seoul in leg one of their Round of 16 tie here in Beijing, Guoan marched into Seoul in great position to reach the round of 8 of Asia’s biggest club competition for the first time ever. A win in Seoul, or a goal-scoring draw would see the Capital club move on to the quarter-final round.
Although Beijing came into this one a little weakened on the defensive end thanks to injuries to veteran defender Zhou Ting and midfielder Wang Xiaolong. It would be a defensive miscue that would gift Guoan the opener. Malian striker Freddie Kanoute jumping on a horrible backpass from a Seoul defender in the 9th minute to open the scoring for Beijing.
As the first half wore on, the home side would start to press and Guoan keeper Yang Zhi had to be at his alert best to keep Beijing in front at the half.
The second half though, would start to swing the way of Seoul however...as Dejan Damjanovic had a chance from the penalty spot in the 60th. But the effort of the Montenegro effort would find the woodwork.
Beijing, lucky to escape there but a minute later. Seoul would level as their Brazilian import Adilson converted to level the scoreline.
Then in the 70th, Seoul took the lead as Il-Yun Lok blasted one home to put Beijing on the ropes.
And things got worse 10 minutes later when Guoan goalscorere...Kanoute was sent off after his second booking, leaving Beijing down to 10 men. |
