Such a lovely noise, isn't it? Light nose.
The popping of a cork, an intake of air, a slosh around the mouth, the soundtrack in a way of life. Jancis Robinson's soundtracked now for four decades. In the early 1970s she started to write about food and wine at university. Today she's one of a handful of people who really can claim to influence wine taste all around the globe. At the heart of her success is a rare ability to taste and attention to detail and hard work. And she's demonstrated in countless newspaper columns, books, television and radio programmes. She's made what's intimidating and bewildering to many accessible and fun.
We wanted to look at Jancis Robinson's life in wine, not just for a fascinating story of one life but because those four decades capture a period in which all of our relationships with wine change beyond recognition. So in this programme, perhaps against the wishes of our central character, we're going to talk about wine.
"I actually don't think that wine is something well suited to talking about. I think you can write about it to try and educate people or, guess, inform them as it's becoming now that everyone knows so much more about wine. But it is not my idea of fun actually to sit round the dinner table talking about the wine."
