Many artists, including Uccello, were familiar with using geometric pavement designs to create a sense of three-dimensional space in interiors. But on a battlefield, no such pavement would be possible. The challenge Uccello seems to have set himself was to apply the laws of perspective to a scene of chaos.
Uccello is probably the first artist who tries to subject everything forests and patches of grass and so on to perspective. On the face of it a battle is a very improbable think in which to bring order and battles are chaotic, and people fall off horses, lances break and so on. But when you look more carefully you suddenly realise there's a kind of order in this madness, that he has regularised things. And lots of the lances have fallen back in straight lines into the picture.
