By the mid 1420s, the young Uccello had probably left Ghiberti's workshop. He stayed on good terms with his former master and might even have been privy to the designs for Ghiberti's second set of Baptistery doors the celebrated Gates of Paradise. They featured a battle scene that might well have impressed itself on the mind of the young Uccello.
By the 1430s, Paolo was ready to undertake a giant artwork of his own. One which was, in effect, a dress rehearsal for the San Romano paintings a fresco of the English mercenary general, Sir John Hawkwood.
John Hawkwood, who was known as Giovanni Acuto in Italy because they couldn't say "Hawkwood" was born in Essex in 1320, fought in the Hundred Years War alongside the Black Prince, never goes back to England. He becomes the force to be reckoned with in Italian military affairs. He was a really rugged, rough, brutal soldier of fortune, but a very, very successful one. |
