But the prophesied apocalypse based on an interpretation of an ancient Mayan calendar that said the deadline just after 11 am GMT has not materialised. More details on this unusual day now from Karen Zarindast.
In southwest Colorado a group of Americans decided to take shelter in the mountains to survive the doomsday. Robin Peterson thought it wasn't safe in the cities.
"And we really just don't want to be in the cities for that, because we have children."
In Mexico they opened a museum dedicated to Mayan culture.
"The new multi-million-dollar museum to the Mayan culture will  be open."
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration or NASA was inundated with calls."We normally get about 100 calls per week. We were getting 200 to 300 calls per day."
