Hello and welcome to the Film Programme, which this week will get to the bottom of what makes a British film comedy British, apart from the liberal use of the word "bottom". What makes us laugh seems to define who we are as a nation, and yet American audiences have always looked to British performers to provide them with some element they can't quite manage to grow at home. They extracted it from Chaplin, Stan Laurel, Peter Sellers, the Carry On and Monty Python teams. Now they are sucking greedily on Sacha Baron Cohen, Russel Brand, and the man sitting next to me here in the studio - a British actor who's so adored by America that they let him join the crew of the Starship Enterprise, the Mission Impossible team, and the gang assembled by Steven Spielberg for Tintin. I'm talking about Simon Pegg, of course, star of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Paul and a new gothic comedy called A Fantastic Fear of Everything in which he plays a paranoid, disaster-prone children's author, who in the course of a few hours, demolishes a restaurant table, incinerated underpants and part of his head, super-glues a carving knife to his hand, falls out of the back of a police van, and finds himself bound and gagged in a cellar.
