On June 18th, 1982 early in the morning, a man's body was found hanging here under Blackfriars Bridge, half submerged in the dirty waters of the River Thames.
"The body that was found hanging it was at the forehand of two sections of scaffolding. He had a rope around his neck. He was weighted down with 12 pounds of stones in his trousers. He was found to have a passport in the name of Calvini which was a false passport. He also had about $15,000 in currency in his pockets, various currencies. The man who had clearly been in the river up to his chest overnight."
But it wasn't clear how he got here. The body was identified as belonging to Roberto Calvi, a prominent Italian banker, who'd fled Italy just days earlier. Jeff Katz, a corporate investigator hired by his family, says looking at the scene here below the bridge, the police immediately assumed it was suicide.
His family contending, as they have done ever since, that he was murdered. The family say his enemies were trying to prevent him from revealing embarrassing details about the mafia, the Vatican and the masons.
