Vechosy35 years ago, Parisians were getting used to a new and very different kind of building in their midst. The Pompidou Centre was built as a grand new home for modern art. One of the architects who designed the building, Richard Rogers, has been talking to Vincent Dowd.
The voice of Georges Pompidou, president of France from 1969. One of his early acts was to commission a big new cultural centre for Paris. In fact, Pompidou didn't live to see it. He died in 1974. But when it opened, it was an immediate hit with Parisians and tourists alike. Today, 35 years on, it still is.
Outside on the Pompidou Centre's large and gently sloping piazza, the street musicians and performers are just beginning to assemble, as they do most mornings. Once the doors open at 11, the longue queues of visitors quickly disappear inside.
It's a big, strikingly colourful building of glass and steel, in 1977 radically different from the rest of Paris. The competition to design it had been anonymous. To general surprise, the winning design of 700 submissions was the work of an Anglo-Italian partnership - Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano. They shared a vision: the new centre should be open and democratic.35年前,巴黎人开始接受出现在自己城市中的一幢与众不同的新建筑。
