But Mr Obama also assured Kabul NATO is committed to a long-term strategic relationship beyond that date. Caroline Wyatt reports.
As the summit ended, NATO leaders promised they were not abandoning Afghanistan but rather setting out a road map for the years ahead even as their combat troops prepared to leave. President Obama said that the war would be ended responsibly, but the British Prime Minister David Cameron insisted that Afghan forces would be capable of taking on what he called any residual insurgency. He said the NATO mission would now turn to training, advising and assisting the Afghan security forces with Afghans in the lead from the middle of next year.
