Sport for athletes with an impairment has been around for over 100 years, according to the International Paralympic Committee. The Games themselves were first held in Rome in 1960. Over the following half century they've gradually acquired a higher public profile with an increasingly enthusiastic audience. And where there's an audience, there are business opportunities, including sponsorship. Liz Johnson is a British swimmer who already has one gold and one silver medal from previous Paralympics as well as a selection from World and European Championships. And she's hoping for more in London. She took a short break from her training to talk to me and told me first why she thinks sponsors are taking more of an interest in the Games.
"For the first time ever, Paralympians have been included alongside of Olympians within those teams. So I think they've realised actually we're really athletes too, but also there're so many things that can be taken from our journeys and our stories that can be linked into businesses and maybe initiatives that they're using within schools and the communities as well."
"How do you think this helps the profile of the businesses that your name is going to be associated with?"
"I think obviously everybody loves success and so as athletes, we tend to be successful and that's why they've chosen us to work with us, but also, it wasn't easy and you don't just wake up and with the ability to win a gold medal. And so I think our stories and the highs and the lows that we've gone through really reflect similar experiences that they have within the business or within projects so then people can draw from that, because a lot of people like sport and have some kind of connection with sport."
