Trogloraptor, Latin for "cave robber," hangs from primitive webs on cave ceilings. The spider was first discovered by American amateur cave explorers in the northwestern state of Oregon. They sent around a dozen specimens to the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, where it took scientists two years to establish that Trogloraptor represents a new family of spider.
The researchers don't know how it hunts or what it eats. But according to Charles Griswold from the California Academy of Sciences, it's a fierce and specialised predator.
"It has very long legs. At the end of these legs are remarkable claws. The claws are very long. They have many sharp teeth. And they fold back against what we called the tarsus, or part of the spider's foot, where they interact with a set of very sharp, stout spikes.
