So when Syria said it had shot down a Turkish jet that had breached its airspace, there was some concern about how the incident might play out. Today, the Turkish President Abdullah Gul said it was important first to establish all the facts.
"It's not possible to cover up such an incident. Whatever is necessary will be done. There's no hesitation about this. It's certain that the plane was shot down. We are not making the statement before waiting for everything to be clarified. These are incidents with significant consequences. Now the investigation is ongoing to identify where exactly the plane was shot down. Then, necessary steps will be taken."
So is the situation likely to lead to an escalation in tensions between the two countries? I put that question to our correspondent in Istanbul, Jonathan Head.
"It doesn't sound that likely to me at the moment. But that really depends on what the Turkish enquiry finds. I mean the Turks are not at this stage accepting at face value what the Syrian government has said. The Syrian government account puts this aircraft very deep inside Syrian territory. And that raises very big questions. What was it doing? If it was where the Syrian say it was, a neat kilometre off their coast and heading very fast inland, how did it go so badly off course? The President Gul referred to the routine that some planes strayed occasionally into the airspace of other countries, but the Syrian description is not of straying that it had been very well inside Syrian territory."自从去年叙利亚国内爆发反对总统巴沙尔的起义活动以来，叙利亚与土耳其两国关系就不断处于紧张态势之中。因此，眼下叙利亚方面声称一架土耳其的喷气式战斗机由于侵犯叙领空而被其击落，国际各界纷纷关注此次事件将如何收场。今天，土耳其总统阿布杜拉•古力发表声明称首先最重要的是建立起事实。
