The annual university entrance examination is drawing near. It’s a crucial time for last minute cramming and preparations. To millions of high school students in China, it will be an exam that defines their future. But a photo posted online recently has triggered wide discussion, over how much a student should have to endure to get to university.
It is coined "the most hard-working class in history" by netizens.
The picture has sent shockwaves across the country.

Gao Yong, Director of Xiaogan 1st High School in Hubei Province, said, "It is amino acid, we consider it might beef up students’ energy in preparation for the university entrance examination. "
Students can opt to take the IV drips, at a cost of 10 yuan. The school subsidises the remaining small proportion of fees.
It has proven its popularity. The school medical center’s reservation list was already brimming that day, so to save precious time for studying, the students moved the injections to the classroom.
A senior student of Xiaogan 1st High School said, "It must be good for health, we have lots of pressures, study late at night and wake up early."
There are over 1,000 senior students in the high school, half of them have demanded for the amino injection.
Their teachers have also been persuasive.
A teacher said, "Our class director said amino acid is great for the last-minute effort, it can keep your body strength up for a month."
But doctors have called the school’s decision an abuse of medicine for quick benefits.
Jin Guiming, director of Military Hospital in Wuhan city, said,
"Amino acid is used for people with fragile immune system, and it may cause negative reaction such as inflammation. "
They say it is very dangerous to have IV drips in classrooms in the absence of medical staff.
And it is unnecessary as long as regular meals are ensured for senior students. |
