I understand it's confusing but I really am now in Belgium and now a step away, I'm in the Netherlands now - a foot in both nations. On the programme this week: borders and maps, politics, history and nationality, how the lines we draw on the surface of the planet protect us, oppress us, define us.
Welcome to the weird world of Baarle in the Netherlands. It's a small town wrapped around a busy main road. It's home to eight or nine thousand people. And scattered through the town are 20 Belgian enclaves. Inside some of them are Dutch enclaves, too - nations within nations within nations. Marked by white crosses and metal plates on the road, the border, the borders run through the middle of people's homes, through shops and bars and along the street, veering off to left and right. It's a strange legacy of medieval land deals. It's complex beyond belief. But the people here seem to get on just fine and we'll hear more from them later.
The strange map of Baarle-Hertog and Baarle-Nassau, the two parts of this town, is an entertaining oddity.
