It was one of the most dramatic defections from the Soviet Union. On the 9th of March, 1967, the only daughter of the dictator Joseph Stalin, Svetlana Alliluyeva, asked for asylum in the United States.
The world's press was waiting when she finally arrived in New York. Svetlana Alliluyeva told the journalists how she'd been visiting India to take home the ashes of her third husband, the Indian communist Brajesh Singh, when she decided that she could not return and had walked into the US Embassy in Delhi. What, journalists wanted to know, had made her leave behind her country and her two grown-up children.
"It was quite difficult for me to decide to leave them. But the decision not to return back was too serious for me. I could not continue the same life, the same useless life which I had for 40 years. I wanted to have a, another life, new life. And I said already I hope that they will understand me."
Svetlana settled in the United States. She published an autobiography that was met with howls of protest from Moscow. She married again briefly an American architect and had a daughter Olga and she changed her name to Lana Peters.
