Japan says 1.75 million people have been infected with a flu virus that has left eight people dead.
An eight-year-old primary school boy in Hokkaido died in hospital two days after being infected with the new strain of influenza. So far, he is the youngest to die in the flu epidemic.
The Ministry of Health says the flu patients are mainly children under the age of 14 and the elderly over the age of 60. 7,000 schools have been closed as the flu spreads. A new cold front forecast for Wednesday could cause cases to continue to rise.
Japan's National Institute of Infectious Diseases says the elderly are more vulnerable to pneumonia or chronic disease caused by the flu. And it recommends people with flu symptoms not visit senior patients in hospital or homes for the elderly.
