China is to open the Sansha Islands in the South China Sea up to tourism ahead of the May Day holiday. Visitors will be able to travel to the islands on cruise tours.
Details of the tour routes and cruises are to be released at a later date. Cruises are the most popular method of visiting the islands, as tourist amenities are still relatively undeveloped on the islands. Each cruise ship accommodates nearly 2,000 passengers.
Experts say munber of visitors to the islands will be limited at any one time in an effort to protect the fragile natural environment.

Tan Li, Executive Vice Governor of Hainan province, said, "We will improve the infrastructure of our marine theme park, duty-free shopping and entertainment center, and underwater archaeology base. We welcome high-end restaurants and hotels to Hainan. We will give them preferential tax plans, according to their brand recognition and their investments."

西沙群岛将作为海南岛的延伸产品，给现有的海南岛产品带来新元素，为游客带去更多新鲜刺激的海岛新体验。由于西沙群岛远离大陆，海水纯净，能见度高达40米，潜水和钓鱼就是最重要的两大游乐项目。
目前三沙旅游接待能力有限，三沙游将以邮轮旅游的形式进行，食宿均在邮轮上，游客可登岛进行观光活动。具体的旅游线路、接待量、邮轮设施等情况，海南省会进一步向外界公布。
据悉，去年6月21日成立的三沙市是中国最年轻的地级市，拥有中国最大的海域面积和最小的陆地面积，管辖西沙群岛、中沙群岛、南沙群岛的岛礁及其海域。三沙市委书记、市长肖杰在接受媒体采访时表示，三沙市有丰富的旅游资源，有很多美丽的岛礁，游客可以观看海景、欣赏珊瑚礁，还可以游览西沙甘泉岛唐宋居住遗址和北礁古代沉船遗址，以及西沙纪念碑、南海诸岛纪念碑、西沙将军林等人文景点。
目前，西沙邮轮旅游的邮轮建造已经完成。海航集团旗下的大型邮轮“海娜”号将作为西沙旅游邮轮使用，该邮轮容积总吨位4.7万吨，船身全长223米，船身最大宽度31米，设有客舱739间，可容纳游客1965名，最大航速每小时21海里。 |
