Athletes with intellectual difficulties are competing at the Special Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Their performance received applauds not only from their family members and audience at the site, but also encouraged by world famous sports and entertainment stars like former NBA player Yao Ming and Chinese movie star Zhang Ziyi, who are both ambassadors for the Special Olympics International.
When a big man showed up at the Snow-shoeing competition venue, the atmosphere got warmed up immediately. Yao was joining an event of the Special Olympics which is called Unified Sports Experience. As part of the programme, these experiences provide an opportunity for international celebrities and fans to be paired up with Special Olympic athletes in a series of competitive events.
Zhang Ziyi also attended the event. Around 3,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities started competitions in seven categories of sports including alpine skiing, cross country skiing, snow boarding, snow shoeing, speed skating, figure skating, and floor hockey.
