2012 was a blockbuster year for Hollywood. Tinseltown’s offerings shattered previous attendance and box office records. Now industry executives are hoping 2013 will be a repeat performance.
2012 was a blockbuster year for Hollywood as it pulled in a performance as big and spectacular as the productions it’s known for.
Last year domestic ticket sales exploded reaching a record-breaking $10.8 Billion; and attendance rebounded to more than 1.3 billion. A far cry from 2011’s 16-year low in attendance a low-point that had some experts believing..."the box office in North America is pretty flat."
Instead in 2012 box office receipts topped 10.7 billion for the first time ever and three movies joined the billion-dollar-club: Avengers, Dark Knight Rises and SkyFall. It’s a comeback story thanks in part to those commercially-minded action films and well-written, highly-produced dramas like Lincoln.
In 2012 we had the perfect storm of movies, just the right combination of film, comedy, sci-fi, action, super heroes and it all played out very, very well for Hollywood.
The 2012 Holiday season was particularly profitable for the studios with The Hobbit and Django topping $33 million opening weekend.
And Les Miserable coming in a close third. With that kind of year-end success, analysts believe 2013 could too be a record breaker, one that could see ticket sales surpass $11 billion.
Even still, experts say, if Hollywood wants to repeat years like this one, they must continue to look far beyond the domestic North American market.
Janet Yang, Hollywood Film Producer, said, "They now have to really look at the world as a piece an there are other markets besides China that are growing, Russia, India"
Because it’s the global market that will yield even more record-breaking returns.
