China, Australia and New Zealand have started their first joint militaryexercise in the Australian coastal city of Brisbane. The drill aims to improve humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.
Working together is the name of the game. China is taking part in "Exercise Cooperation Spirit 2012".
The exercise involves military planners and medical personnel from the Chinese, Australian and New Zealand Defense Forces.
The head of the Chinese medical unit says the three sides exchanged their experiences on humanitarianassistance and disaster relief.
Xu Jianzhong, head of Chinese medical unit, says, "We have been greatly inspired by our counterparts’ experience in medical rescues. Most importantly, we discussed how to better cooperate in the future for multi-national humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations."
The New Zealand Defence force made a presentation on the response to the Christchurch earthquake in February last year.
There was also a discussion-based table top planning activity, a Multinational Medical Unit capability demonstration, and a tour of flood-affected areas of Brisbane.
Senior National Officer Chris Mitchell of the New Zealand Army says the drill will help enhance relationships and understanding, and awareness of health response capabilities.
