Incumbent Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has won thepresidential election with 54.42 percent of the vote, TibisayLucena Ramirez, president of the National Electoral Council (CNE) announced late Sunday.With 90 percent of the votes counted, Chavez, who will serve athird six-year term starting from January 2013, defeatedopposition challenger Henrique Capriles, who represents the Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) coalition and gained 44.97 percent of votes.
"We achieved an 80.9 percent participation rate, the highest participation rate in decades," saidRamirez.
Chavez supporters fired massive fireworks into the sky in celebration, as the result was announced.
Some 19 million Venezuelans were eligible to vote in Sunday's elections The polling stations weresupposed to close at 6 p.m, but many polling stations stayed open later because voters were stillwaiting outside to vote.
委内瑞拉全国选举委员会当地时间７日晚间宣布，现任总统查韦斯以５４．４２％的得票率赢得委内瑞拉总统选举。
根据全国选举委员会公布的数字，在已经统计出的９０％左右的选票中，查韦斯的得票率为５４．４２％，反对党候选人卡普里莱斯赢得４４．９７％的选票。其余待统计选票不会改变整个选举结果。
选举初步结果公布后，反对党候选人卡普里莱斯表示选民的决定是神圣的，他会尊重这一结果，同时也不会忘记自己对国家的承诺和政治理想，并向投票给他的众多支持者表示感谢。虽然内心难过，但他对查韦斯再次当选表示衷心祝贺，并表示将和所有委内瑞拉人一起解决国家面临的问题。
查韦斯随后在数万名支持者面前发表讲话，他向所有投票支持和反对他的选民表示感谢，对反对党领导人接受选举结果表示敬意，并称这次选举是民主和人民的胜利。
据统计，此次总统选举的投票率超过８０％，整个投票过程基本平静。
查韦斯１９９８年首次当选委内瑞拉总统，迄今已在这个南美国家连续执政近１４年。再次连任成功后，他又赢得了６年总统任期。
