Apple chief apologizes for maps app errorsTim Cook, Apple’s chief executive, has apologized to iPhoneusers for failings in its new Maps application after more than aweek of complaints about the service's accuracy.

In a rare moment of contrition from the world’s most valuable company, Mr Cook said Apple was “extremely sorry for the frustration” caused by misplaced landmarks and incorrectly namedlocations in Maps, which replaced Google Maps in the latest version of the iPhone and iPad'soperating system.

Mr Cook even suggested that customers should continue to use Google Maps through a web app, as well as pointing users towards other alternatives by smartphone rivals including Nokia andMicrosoft while Apple works to fix the problem.

“At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to ourcustomers,” Mr Cook wrote in an open letter published on Apple's website.

Shares in Apple fell by more than 1 per cent in morning trading in New York, but have reboundedfrom the day's low of $666.82.

Apple has been accused of putting corporate interests ahead of its customers’ by ousting GoogleMaps, which has been bundled into the iPhone's software since its launch in 2007, in favor of an in-house product. Google’s Android smartphone software is used by the iPhone's main competitors, such as Samsung’s Galaxy S3.
