英语翻译技巧精讲：英文翻译中的前与后如何翻译
你分得清英语中的“前与后”吗?前”与“后”是两个常用的表示方向的词，好像意思比较明白，说话人面对的是“前(后)”front，背后的则是“后(方)”back。
可是用以指时间时就可能产生混淆，比如“前些日子”recently、“前功尽弃”All the previous efforts have been
wasted，“前无来者，后无古人”There was no parallel in past history and there will be no
parallel in future either，
其中的“前”指过去的时间—past time ，“后”指未来的时间—future，而大家常说的“往前看”(look
forward)和“前程远大”(have a bright future)中的“前”却指未来的时间。
此外，“前面一章”(the previous
chapter)、“前任”(predecessor)等说法中的“前”指先发生的，“饭前/后”(before / after the
meal)、“后发制人”(gain mastery by striking only after the enemy has
struck)等中的“后”指后发生的。
“前”和“后”放在表示时间的词语后面意思又不一样，如“日前”却是“几天以前”的意思(the other day或a few days
ago)。所以英语里翻译时碰到“前”和“后”首先要弄清楚时间指向，当然还要注意不同的习惯说法。有趣的是，“前”和“后”放在一起却表示“大概”的意思，比如“三点钟前后”(around/about
three o’clock)。
最后说一下，before译成汉语不一定是“在……之前”，如
We have to take action before it’s too late. 译为“我们必须采取行动，否则就来不及了”。
而“您先请”英语一般说 After you, please!也值得我们思考
