his body with long bamboo poles, but, to their distress, without avail.
这里有四个动作“赶来”、“划着船”、“拿着竹竿”、“打捞”，这里重点是“打捞”，所以这个词组可以译为非谓语动词，“划着船”、“拿着竹竿”则可以译为动词的非谓语形式或介词短语。另外，“什么也没打捞到”，在英语中不宜重复动词，可译为but
failed 或but of no avail。
amourisgreatcn童鞋(超细心哦)指出“附近的渔民赶来，中文并没有表达出是通过渔船赶来的，渔船的作用是打捞尸体的”
我觉得说得很有道理，参考译文未必恰当(当然如果是在威尼斯或某个水城又另当别论，大家把小船作为交通工具的话)。
这句话也可以换个译法，如：On hearing the news of his suicide, people came hurriedly.
Paddling in their boats with long bamboo poles in hands, they attempted to
retrieve his body.
或Paddling in their boats, they attempted to retrieve his body with long
bamboo poles.
