A new video breaks down a century of food trends in America, from the cheap
and simple favorites at the beginning of the 1900s to the ethnic picks most
served today.
The Mode.com clip, Called 100 Years of Family Dinner, is a fascinating look
at just how much American cuisine has evolved since WWI.

Starting in 1915, the video beginnings with the camera trained on a plate
of roast beef and Franconia potatoes. The plate itself, like those included
throughout the video, also represents the time period.
During World War I, women were advised to serve their families beef, pork,
and mutton no more than once a day to make sure there'd be enough for everyone,
so a hearty meal like this one was likely to be saved for dinner.
In the 1920s, Prohibition was in effect in the US, so any recipes that
called for wine, sherry, or any other alcohol demanded a bit of improvising from
cooks.

For family dinner in 1925, the video features chicken à la King - a dish of
chicken and vegetables in a cream sauce, which is served over rice.

The Great Depression hit in the '30s, meaning the video's 1935 meal -
creamed chipped beef and buttered peas - is pretty simple.

The video's featured meal for 1955 - a Banquet brand turkey dinner with
mashed potatoes and peas, served in an aluminum container - was a popular
choice.
The meal for 1985 is still a common favorite for children: A Sloppy Joe
sandwich with macaroni and cheese.

Mexican and Tex-Mex dishes were particularly popular, making the video's
1995 meal - beef tacos with refried beans - and apt choice.

Globalization continued to effect meal choices in the new millennium, with
Japanese food - and especially sushi, 2005's dish - becoming a go-to.
The video features grilled salmon over quinoa and kale salad for 2015, a
spread that would undoubtedly please Gwyneth Paltrow and other svelte stars
obsessed with the leafy green.
