The decade-long search for Osama bin Laden, the leader of a terrorist network that launched repeated attacks in the West -- most spectacularly in the U.S. on Sept. 11, 2001, ended in May 2011 when a U.S. special forces team killed him at a compound inside Pakistan.

2.Harry Potter

The eighth and final film of the Harry Potter series, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part: 2," debuted in theaters in July 2011, earning nearly $170 million in its opening weekend. The film concluded the movies based on bestselling author J.K. Rowlings' series, which began onscreen in 2001 with "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." 3.'The Oprah Winfrey Show'

After 25 years of celebrity interviews, book club picks and lavish audience giveaways, talk-show host Oprah Winfrey broadcast her last episode in May 2011. Winfrey's guests included Liberace,
shortly before he died, and Tom Cruise in a memorable couch-jumping episode.But her 1993 interview with Michael Jackson became the show's highest-rated episode. The influential Oprah's Book Club pushed obscure titles onto bestseller lists but also caused controversy when James Frey, above, admitted fabricating parts of his memoir, a book club pick.

4.Borders bookstores

Founded in 1971, the company grew to operate 511 Borders superstores throughout the world. The company stopped making a profit after 2006. In early 2011, Borders filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, but was unable to find a buyer. Its inventory was liquidated, and the last remaining stores closed their doors in October 2011.

6.Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs, the technology pioneer who co-founded Apple in 1976 and transformed one industry after another, from computers and smart phones to music and movies, died in October 2011. Jobs spoke of his desire to make "a dent in the universe," bringing a messianic intensity to his message that technology was a tool to improve human life and unleash creativity.

7.Moammar Kadafi
Erratic and mercurial, Moammar Kadafi fancied himself a political philosopher, practiced an unorthodox, deadly diplomacy and cut an at times cartoonish figure in robes and sunglasses, surrounded by female guards. He ruled Libya with an iron fist for 42 years, but the "Arab Spring" uprising against tyrants in the Middle East ignited an internal rebellion against Kadafi and led to the end of his reign. In October 2011, the deposed Libyan dictator was captured and killed in the fall of his hometown of Surt.

The military's ban on gays serving openly in the U.S. armed forces, known as "don't ask, don't tell,' ended in September 2011. More than 13,000 military personnel were discharged under the policy in the 18 years it was in effect.

9,Regis Philbin

Regis Philbin said goodbye to his "Live!" fans in November 2011 after cohosting the program since 1985. Philbin, 80, first entered the world of talk shows in 1964, when he briefly replaced Steve Allen on the "Westinghouse Tonight Show from Hollywood." In 2004, he broke the Guinness world record of most hours on camera, with 15,188. When he finished his last "Live!" episode, he had about 16,500 hours on the air.
