Out in the left field的字面意思是“外出到田野左边去”，比喻为“(做事)不专心”或“(说话)跑题”的意思。
A: Your car is great. How did you afford such a coolset of wheels?
你的车真是太棒了。你怎么买得起这么棒的车呀?
B: I worked all summer. It was brutal.
我整个暑假都在工作，实在是很辛苦。

英语中一种修饰法——以部分代整体，称为“提喻”。A set of wheels是一套车轮的意思，比喻为“车子”的意思。
像这样的用法很多，例如：Two heads are better than one. (三个臭皮匠，顶个诸葛亮。)Great mindthink
alike. (英雄所见略同。)其中的head和mind均以人体的某部分来代表“人”这个一整体。
A: You wanna go cruising?
你想去兜风吗?
B: Absolutely. Can I drive?
当然要啦，我可以开你的车吗?
A: Keep dreaming. I am the only one who can drivethis car.
想得美哦，这辆车只能我来开。

Go cruising的愿意是“航船巡游，巡航”，引申为“兜风”的意思。
