2、Some pessimistic historians think the whole society of man runs in cycles
3、and that one of the phases is war.
4、The optimists, on the other hand,
5、think war is not like a flood or a spell of bad weather.

26、a loud noise, a distant puff of smoke and then...silence.
27、The pictures of the victim’s wife and children,
28、which he carries in his breast pocket,
29、are destroyed with him.
30、He is not heard to cry out.
31、The question of compassion or pity or remorse does not enter into it.
32、The enemy is not a man, he is a statistic.
33、It is true, too,
34、that more people are being killed at war now than previously
35、because we’re better at doing it than we used to be.
36、One man with one modern weapon can kill thousands.
