2、In the earliest stages of man’s development
3、he had no more need of money than animals have.
4、He was content with simple forms of shelter
5、and from natural materials around him,
6、he made his own rough tools and weapons.
7、As he became more civilized,
8、however, he began to want better shelter,
9、more efficient tools and weapons,
10、and more comfortable clothing
11、than could be provided by the work of his own unskilled hands.
12、For these things he had to turn to the skilled people

14、It was then that the question of payment arose.
15、At first he got what he wanted by a simple process of exchange.
16、The smith who had not the time to look after land or cattle
17、was glad to take meat or grain
18、from the farmer in exchange for an axe or a plough.
19、But as more and more goods which had no fixed exchange value
20、came on the market,
21、exchange became too complicated to be satisfactory.
22、Another problems arose
23、when those who made things wanted to get stocks of wood，
24、leather or iron,
25、but had nothing to offer in exchange
26、until their finished goods were ready.
27、Thus the difficulties of exchange
28、led by degrees to the invention of money.
29、In some countries,
30、easily handled things like seeds or shells
31、were given a certain value and the farmer,
32、instead of paying the smith for a new axe
33、by giving him some meat or grain,
34、gave him so many shells.
35、If the smith had any shells left when he had bought his food,
36、he could get stocks of the raw materials of his trade.
37、In some countries quite large things
38、such as cows or camels or even big flat stones were used for trade.
39、Later, pieces of metal,
40、bearing values according to the rarity of the metal
41、and the size of the pieces of coins were used.
42、Money as we know it had arrived.
