含义
喻指“金钱，物质财富”。
原文：When Moses went up to receive the Ten Commandments (Exodus24:12-18), he left the Israelites for forty days and forty nights. The Israelites feared that he would not return and demanded that Aaron make them "gods" to go before them (Exodus32:1). Aaron gathered up the Israelities' golden earrings ,constructed a "golden calf".摩西上西乃山领受十诫时，耗费了40昼夜（《出埃及记24:12-18》）。以色列人担心他不再回来，便要求亚伦制造神像（《出埃及记32:1》）。于是，亚伦用百姓摘下的金耳环，铸造了金牛犊。
典故
在古代近东和爱琴海地区，野牛受到广泛的崇拜。据《圣经·旧约·出埃及记》记载，摩西上西乃山领受十诫时，离开以色列人40昼夜。以色列人担心他不再回来，要求亚伦为他们制造神像。于是，亚伦用他们摘下的金耳环，铸造了一个金牛犊。摩西见到百姓放肆，就站在营门口，说：“凡属耶和华的，都要到我这里来。”于是，利未的子孙，都聚集到他那里。在摩西的眼中，放肆的是百姓，而亚伦的责任，充其量只是放纵百姓而已。百姓的罪行十分严重，必须受到严惩。因此，摩西按照上帝的旨意，命令利未的子孙斩杀了三千名百姓。

原文：The word 'scapegoat' is an English translation of the Hebrew azazel (Hebrew: עזאזל) which occurs inLeviticus16:8. It is supported by the Greek Old Testamenttranslation as "the sender away (of sins)".“scapegoat”一词出现在《旧约·利未记16：8》，是希伯来语阿撒泻勒（希伯来语：עזאזל）的英语翻译。在希腊《旧约》中译为“将罪行转于别处”。
典故
据《圣经·旧约·利未记》记载，上帝为考验亚伯拉罕的忠诚，叫他带自己的独子以撒到一个指定的地方，并把以撒杀了作燔祭，献给上帝。然而，正当亚伯拉罕要拿刀杀他的儿子时，有个天使加以阻止，说：“现在我知道你是敬畏上帝的了，前面林子里有一只羊，你可用它来‘祭献’上帝。”于是，亚伯拉罕便把小树林中的那只山羊抓来杀了，代替他的儿子献给燔祭。
