But first in the weeks since the killings in Paris, there has been much soul-searching over whether the carnage could have been prevented. Now the BBC has learned that there was an attempt to arrest Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the presumed ringleader of the Paris operation, months before the attacks. A senior anti-terrorism source in Belgium says Abaaoud was tracked to an apartment in Athens, but got away. Chris Morris has this report from the Greek capital.
"Abdelhamid Abaaoud was killed in a police raid in Paris five days after the attacks that he led and organised. But the BBC has learned there was an operation to capture Abaaoud in Athens ten months earlier and it failed. It was supposed to happen just before an anti-terrorism operation in the Belgian town of Verviers on January 15th. Two Islamist extremists were killed there, but they were part of a network stretching to the other side of Europe because Abaaoud was directing the jihadi cell in Belgium by mobile phone from here in Athens, and the authorities were on his trail. Two days after the shootout in Verviers the police here in Athens raided two apartments but by then of course, Abaaoud was long gone."
