China automaker BYD has signed up international celebrity Leonardo DiCaprio
as brand ambassador for its new energy vehicles.

As brand endorsements go, it’s not a bad mix: BYD supplied 11% of the
world’s new energy vehicles in 2015. DiCaprio’s foundation, the Leonardo
DiCaprio Foundation, has given $61 million over the years for projects that
build climate resiliency.

“All over the world, people are realizing that cars that run on fossil
fuels are inefficient and a major threat to the planet,” said DiCaprio said in a
statement. “I am very pleased to be joining an effort to increase the number of
clean vehicles on the road in China and beyond.” DiCaprio said.

The agreement runs through 2017.

BYD, which sells electric buses as well as cars, saw a 130% increase in new
energy vehicle sales in the first half of 2016, allowing the company to
strengthen its hold on the Chinese plug-in vehicle market with a 65% share.

BYD’s chairman Wang Chuanfu has a fortune worth $4.3 billion on the
