看美剧学口语：我们为什么要阅读？
每逢假期到来，随之而来的就是做不完的作业，有一部分同学会抓紧利用这个空档来阅读课外书籍，另一部分同学则是被老师要求阅读课外书籍，怎样逃避阅读书籍的时间，并且还能在开学之后回答老师的提问呢？查理布朗的朋友Patty就遇到了这个问题，于是她向查理布朗求助。
Patty: Guess what, Chuck. Disaster time.你猜怎么着，查克（Chair的昵称），大难临头了。
Our teacher wants us to read a book during Christmas vacation.我们老师要求我们在圣诞假期里阅读一本书。
Got any suggestions?你有什么建议吗？
Chair Brown: On what book to read?关于读什么书吗？
Patty: No. On how to get out of it.不是，是关于怎样不读。

Disaster time灾难时刻
在口语中很好使用，常用在一个糟糕的时刻，无论是你被布置了太多的作业时，还是被老妈要求做家务的时候，你都可以用disaster time来表达你糟透了的感觉。
Got any suggestions？你有什么建议吗？
向别人寻求帮助时比较随意的表达方式，相对表委婉，也可以更简略地说成any suggestions？比较完整的表达方式可以是Do you have any suggestions?而What suggestion do you have?就相对更正式一些。
Patty: I’m not going to have to read a book, Marcie.我不用读课外书了，玛茜
See, A Tale of Two Cities was just on TV.你看，电视上正在放《双城记》。
I watched the movie, so now I won’t have to read the book.我看过电影后，现在就不用再去看书了。
The only thing I didn’t understand were the parts about the shampoo, the soap and the coffee.只有一件事我不明白，就是电影里关于洗发精、肥皂和咖啡的部分。
Marcie: Those were the commercials, sir.那些是商业广告，小子。

这里比较有趣的表达方式在Marcie对Patty的称呼，sir。Patty明明是女生，而死党Marcie却称呼她为sir。一方面因为Patty本人就很假小子，运动神经超发达，作风行为也更像男孩子，所以她的闺蜜自然称呼她sir也就没有问题了。同时sir本身也是对男性的尊称，可以理解为“先生，阁下”的意思，没有其他不好的含义在里面，所以也就没有问题了。就像有的女生之间也会互称兄弟不是吗？
Patty: I’d like to read this book, Marcie, but I’m kind of afraid.我其实挺愿意看这书的，玛茜，但是我有点儿害怕。
I had a grandfather who didn’t think much of reading.我的祖父他不太重视看书这件事。
He always said if you read too many books, your head would fall off.他总说如果你看太多书的话，你的头就会掉下来的。
Marcie: You start the first chapter, sir, and I’ll hold on to your head.你从第一章开始看，小子，我帮你扶住脑袋。

Kind of有点儿
口语中的表达方式，表示“有点儿，有几分”例如Patty说的：
I’m kind of afraid.我有点儿害怕。
需要注意的是要区别于a kind of, 当kind前面加了冠词，如a、another、this、one等的话，则理解为“一种、一类”，比如：
It started almost as a kind of game.刚开始的时候几乎就像一场游戏。
The answer itself is a kind of pressure already.这个答案本身就是一种压力。
Think much of对……重视
虽然它的意思是“对……重视”“对……评价很高”，但是多用于否定句里，来表达“对于……不重视，评价不高”。比如Patty的话
I had a grandfather who didn’t think much of reading.我的祖父他不太重视看书这件事。
I don’t think much of him as a football player.我并不认为他是一个了不起的足球运动员。
Marcie: Why aren’t you reading your book, sir?你为什么没在看书，小子？
Patty: It’s too nice a day to stay inside and read, Marcie.这么好的天气怎么能待在屋里看书，玛茜。
Besides, I have to build this snowman.而且，我得堆这个雪人。
If I don’t do it, no one else will, and he’ll never exist.如果我不堆，就没有其他人来堆了，那他就永远不会存在。
I’m his creator. It’s my duty to give him life.我是他的创造者。给予他生命是我的责任。
This snowman has a right to live, Marcie.这个雪人有生存的权利，玛茜。
Marcie: You’re weird, sir.你真怪，小子。
Tips
too…to太……以致不能
这个短语十分重要，它强调的是too引导的前因让to后面这件事不能成立，所以It’s too nice a day to stay inside and read，指的不是“天气太好了适合待在室内阅读。”而应该是“正因为天气太好了所以不应该待在室内阅读”。
It’s one’s duty to do sth.做某事是某人的责任
It’s your duty to finish your homework.完成作业是你的应该要做的。
It’s not my duty to paint this wall.刷这面墙不是我的责任。
Patty: Marcie, what book were we supposed to read during Thanksgiving vacation?玛茜，我们在感恩节假期里要读什么书？
Marcie: This is Christmas vacation, sir.这是圣诞假期，小子。
Patty: Christmas vacation? How can I read something during Christmas vacation when I didn’t read what I was supposed to read during Thanksgiving vacation?圣诞假期？我要怎么在连应该在感恩节里读的书都没有读的圣诞假期里读书？
Marcie: Duck, sir. Easter is coming.亲爱的，小子。复活节都要到了。
Tips
Be supposed to应该，被期望
Vitamin C is supposed to prevent colds.维他命C被认为能预防感冒。
It is supposed to be good hotel.这家旅店口碑不错。
