Central banks around the world are mostly closed shops. The decisions on interest rates, their interventions in financial markets, their supervision of the banking sector, all these things are kept under wraps to prevent market speculation. Arguably, central banks need that sort of monetary mystique to do their job effectively. But this week the Bank of England broke with its 300-year-old tradition of being secretive. It invited the public to have its say over the role of central banks and financial markets in society, all part of an effort to redeem the reputation of financial markets, some seven years after it brought the world economy to its knees. The event took place in London. So did it make a difference?
