There used to be a lot of money in recycled plastic, aluminium, metals and paper, but then came the global drop in commodity prices, including oil from which much plastic is derived. The fall in oil prices and that of a whole range of other commodities has dragged down the price of recycled products. It's now cheaper in some cases to buy new plastic rather than recycled plastic, and that means recyclers are struggling to make a profit. So just how bad is it in the business of waste management at the moment? I asked Ranjit Baxi, President of the London-based Bureau of International Recycling.
Let's take a very simple example. All the listeners, I'm sure are used to drinking Coca-Cola or Fanta in a can of aluminium. Now that can of aluminium needs to be collected once it's thrown away, melted down and produced back into aluminium. You could either use that, or you could use finished aluminium to make the can.
        So new aluminium?
So new aluminium. So if the price of new aluminium has dropped, then the price of what is known in the business language as used beverage cans certainly will drop as well. So it's all demand and supply link. But we must appreciate that we produce around 700 million tons of aluminium worldwide. Nearly 75% of the aluminium produced even today comes through recycled collections. So BBC global listeners are doing a great job. So hats off to their work.
Is it almost impossible with the prices where they are for aluminium to make money in recycling aluminium cans?
