But first since Russia began its air campaign over Syria three weeks ago, there've been a number of close calls with Russian and American planes or drones getting too near each other. Now the risk of a mid-air incident has been substantially reduced after the US and Russian militaries signed a Memorandum of Understanding or MOU. A Pentagon Spokesman, Peter Cook, said it should end the risk of engagement between Russian and American aircrews.
"These protocols include maintaining professional airmanship at all times, the use of specific communication frequencies and the establishment of a communication line on the ground. The US and Russia will form a working group to discuss any implementation issues that follow. The MOU does not establish zones of cooperation, intelligence sharing or any sharing of target information in Syria, the discussions through which this MOU was developed do not constitute US cooperation or support for Russia's policy or actions in Syria."
