Tom Hiddleston and Mia Wasikowska in Crimson Peak, a deliciously lurid Gothic romance written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, a film of ghosts and guilt and gorgeous design. Del Toro is famous for detail, and Tom Hiddleston told me about the very particular notes the director gave him about his character.

"That's what's so amazing about Guillermo del Toro is the rigour and precision of his imagination. As an actor working with him, you are given a screenplay and then you're given a whole world around the screenplay which he's constructed. I remember I had the interesting, lovely things like Thomas Sharpe prefers mornings to evenings, he likes eggs on toast, he likes the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, he doesn't like shellfish because he got sent away to live with his aunt once as a teenager and she served him unsalted mussels with no cream. And so he has a terrible association with the shellfish and you know, you turn up on set with more dimension, I hope, with something more authentic."
