In April, the earthquake which devastated parts of Nepal caused an avalanche which killed 22 people on Mount Everest. It's an event which still reverberates through the Sherpa community who depend on Everest for their livelihood. Ang Kami Sherpa watched in horror as his friends were swept away in April, but he is now back on the mountain, carrying out his work as an "Icefall Doctor". He's one of a team of specialist Sherpa mountaineers who prepare the trails and paths for climbers trying to scale the world's highest mountain. Through an interpreter, he told me about his work.

I'm currently busy making trails and paths for the mountaineers climbing Mount Everest. My job is to fix ladders and ropes and remove snow or ice so as to make it easier to climb.

What sort of condition was the path in after the earthquake and the avalanches?

After the earthquake there were many avalanches and icefalls, and the path and trails had been completely destroyed. There were huge crevasses that were buried by snow. And so it was in a pretty precarious and dangerous state.
