We start today's programme with the incredible story of a man who survived a vicious attack by a polar bear. Matt Dyer is a lawyer from Maine in the United States and a keen hiker. He'd always dreamed of exploring the Torngat National Park in Canada. Two years ago he got to go there on a trip with a few others. At night they put up tents and rigged up an electric fence to keep out the bears. I asked Matt whether he felt secure with just that fence to protect him from one of the world's fiercest predators.

Yes, in fact I did. I had read up on polar bear attacks and, you know, camping up there. And my research indicated it was quite rare that anyone was attacked by a polar bear, that much more common for people to be attacked by black bears and curious grizzlies. And I had no reason to believe that the fence wasn't an adequate deterrent. So I'm not a nervous person. So I, no, I was not concerned.

                So tell us what happened.

Well, we were there in the Torngat Park. And the first morning we were there, I was kinda laying awake in my tent. I heard one of the people on the trip say that there's a bear that was here, and I thought he was lying. He's kind of a jokey guy. So I thought he was just pulling our legs. But I popped my head out of the tent. There's a mother and a cub going down the beach, you know, 100 yards away from us.
