背景介绍:
Recently, Economist Intelligence Unit revealed a latest annual report on living costs of the cities around world. Several Chinese mega cities are on the list. Apart from those traditional expensive global cities like London, Tokyo and Geneva, Chinese cities are witnessed a surge on the list. According to this list, living in Shanghai nowadays is more expensive than living in New York. Some domestic Medias see it as a remarkable sign of great success of economy development while ordinary people keep grumbling about the increasing hardship in their lives.
话题:
1.What do you think about the list?
2.Do the living costs in your city raise a lot in the last decade?
范例1:
Generally speaking, the living costs in a city will increase as the developing of economy. It's natural for the citizens of great cities pay more to live there, because those cities, normally, offer great numbers of well-paid jobs.
However, what happened in Chinese cities on that list are different from the ones in others cities. The increase of per capital income didn't keep the same pace with the enlargement of living costs. In other words, ordinary people feel it is getting harder and harder to maintain a same living standard under the same cost. That, without any doubt, would obviously jeopardise the future of the entire city. People are forced to leave the city because they can't afford the skyrocketing price for renting or buying a flat or simply because their income can't cover the expense of living there. Without those well-educated smart brains, I believe the future of that city would be unwarranted. Meanwhile, an increasing number of companies or headquarters moved out for they can't find proper employees for vacant positions. And the city would lose its well-paid jobs as well as job opportunities. This is a vicious circle that no city wants to be involved.
范例2:
The standard of living for major cities in the world is increasing rapidly, much more quickly than the rise in wages. This puts a lot of pressure on the lives of workers with a salary. Prosperity is supposed to bring a better living standard and happiness for people; at the same time, however, it seems that people may be trapped in a never-ending rat-race, chasing a dream which may be a mirage. The harder they try to get out, the more entangled they become, losing their health and sense of self in a ruined environment.
