音乐剧《曾经》（once）根据2007年的赢得奥斯卡奖的同名影片改编，音乐剧《曾经》叙述了卖花女被街头艺人的音乐所吸引，两人都有着对音乐的热爱和痴迷。在一次合奏中，他们找到了彼此间惊人的默契。这个发现让他们兴奋，很快他们找到了另外的一个同伴，组成了一个乐队，并通过优秀的表现得到了专业人士的肯定。与此同时，爱情也在逐渐萌芽。音乐是这部剧作最大的亮点之一，塑造了极其浪漫唯美的氛围。
音乐剧《曾经》剧中的歌曲皆采用电影版中著名爱尔兰音乐家格伦·汉赛德（Glen Hansard）和作词者玛可塔·伊尔格洛（Markéta Irglová)的原创作品，其中包括《慢慢沉寂（Falling Slowly）》、《如果你需要我（If You Want Me）》、《从天空中坠落（ Fallen from the Sky）》以及《曾经》等经典歌曲。

托尼奖是百老汇的最高奖项：托尼奖全称为安东尼特•佩瑞奖，是由美国戏剧协会为纪念该协会创始人之一的安东尼特•佩瑞女士而设立的。托尼奖设立于1947年，被视为美国话剧和音乐剧的最高奖，共设21个奖项，获提名剧目均是在百老汇各剧院演出的剧目。1947年4月6日，第一届托尼奖在纽约市著名的华尔道夫大饭店揭幕，并由佩瑞的好友兼合作伙伴、美国戏剧协会主席布鲁克•佩贝顿主持。当时的决策机构6 人委员会聘请了15位专家，通过秘密投票方式选出了获奖人。从那之后，托尼奖与百老汇的艺术声望、美学地位和票房收入等一起，成为全球舞台艺术的焦点。
