剧情简介：
20世纪末的纽约东村，这里是流浪汉、吸毒者、醉鬼、靠预言混饭的城市游牧人、落魄的艺术工作者生活的地方，他们不知道下月的房租打哪儿来，不知道下一首歌、下一幅画的灵感出自何方，更不知道艾滋病幽灵的致命袭击会在哪儿现身。
一栋老旧楼房顶层的简陋公寓中，住着两个为了艺术而挣扎的室友：罗杰，是一个因女友自杀而略显自闭的摇滚乐作曲家，曾经有著吸食海洛因的习惯，因此染上了艾滋病，他希望自己在病死以前，能够再创作出一首有些意义的歌曲；马克是一个不太成功的电影工作者，努力在艺术与商业之间寻找着平衡，因为收入有限，跟罗杰一起分租公寓。
这栋公寓，曾经是一家音乐出版公司的办公室，墙上还张贴着许多老旧的摇滚乐海报。房东班尼也曾是他们的室友，不过后来娶了个富翁的千金，买下这栋楼房跟隔壁的空地，虽然曾经有点交情，但班尼对于房租可是不肯通融……
