Metaphor is a unique way of describing something by connecting two ideas. The connection can be funny, strange or beautiful but a good metaphor will always leave a strong impression.Metaphor，隐喻，是一种找到两个事物间的相似点、将其联系到一起的特殊表达方式。隐喻可幽默、可怪诞、可唯美，无论如何，一个好的隐喻总能让人印象深刻。

Pink Floyd乐队创作这首歌是为了献给离队已久的重要成员Syd Barret，Syd Barret由于滥用药物而出现了精神问题。在Pink Floyd录制该张专辑时，Syd Barret甚至还有到访，但是他的容貌发生了巨大改变以至于队友们一开始都没认出他。整张专辑包括"Wish you were here"这首歌都唱出了乐队的失落，感叹他们已经不如往昔那么亲密。
歌词中两个主要的隐喻是"we're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year"和"did you exchange a walk on part in a war for a lead role in a cage?"。
Babette 老师感觉这首歌是对ideal life和contemporary society的思考。歌曲一开始问道：我们是否真的知道what makes us happy？我们是否真的能够区分Heaven与Hell、pleasure与pain？我们是否出卖了ideas和dreams，用来换取得到 modernity, technology, 或money的承诺？这些承诺真的有意义吗？比方说，我们是否放弃了童年时代心中的英雄形象而投身魔鬼，是否牺牲了最基本的安逸生活只为换得一把金钱？我们是想成为良好社会中不起眼的一员，还是想成为一个有身份的奴隶？最后几句歌词唱出了人与人之间亲切感的丧失：我们为何会感觉自己生活在一个鱼缸般的小世界中独自失落，为何会反反复复问着同样的问题却始终得不到答案……
