Exactly 50 years ago today, the BBC broadcast the first episode of a new TV drama. Doctor Who featured a grumpy middle-aged time traveller and evil extraterrestrials called Daleks. Soon Britain was hooked and half a century on Doctor Who remains a worldwide hit.
